Preparing an SVG or DXF File for Laser Cutting

A file that opens fine on screen can cause problems once it's sent to the laser: duplicate lines, unclosed paths, wrong scale. Better to check it before starting the cut. This article complements the fabrication file organization guide and the formats guide.

SVG or DXF: which one to choose?

Both work with most laser software. In short:

  • SVG: ideal for vector drawing and illustrations, widely produced by Illustrator/Inkscape.
  • DXF: technical standard (CAD, CNC), precise on dimensions and units, often supplied by plan providers.
  • In practice: keep the original format and convert only if your software requires it.

The 3 problems that ruin a cut

1. Open paths. A path that looks closed but isn't prevents a clean cut. 2. Duplicates. Two overlapping lines = the laser passes twice over the same spot. 3. Units. A DXF in inches imported as millimeters, and your part comes out the wrong size.

Check before cutting

The ideal is to see the file before opening it in the machine software. An accurate preview of the SVG or DXF already shows you whether it matches the right project and the right version. For technical DXFs, a dedicated tool like DXFFile analyzes and repairs open paths, duplicates, and units before production.
