Organizing your CNC files (DXF, DWG, G-code, drawings)

In CNC, a file mistake can't be undone: you machine a part from the wrong version and the material is gone. Between DXF/DWG drawings, CAD/CAM projects, G-code, and successive revisions, disciplined organization is vital. What makes CNC files risky

Technical files have no preview in Windows Explorer, and two revisions of the same drawing look identical apart from the name. Add in the machine-specific formats (G-code, toolpaths) that only apply to one exact machine + tool pairing, and the risk of confusion skyrockets.

1. A visual library of drawings

2. Tag by machine, tool, and material

The same drawing is machined differently depending on the equipment. Rather than duplicating files, use tags:

  • Machine: 3-axis mill, CNC router, lathe…
  • Material: plywood, MDF, aluminum, POM…
  • Tool: 3 mm end mill, drill bit, engraving tool…
  • Status: to review, cleared for machining, in production

3. Separate sources, CAM, and G-code

Keep the source drawing (DXF/DWG), the CAM project (toolpaths, depths), and the sliced G-code distinct. G-code is specific to one machine and one tool: tagging it clearly prevents accidentally rerunning it on a different setup.

Frequently asked questions

Can you preview a DXF or DWG without CAD software?

Not in Windows Explorer, which shows no preview for these formats. A visual manager like PandaFile generates a thumbnail of the drawing, so you can recognize it without opening your CAD software.

Should you archive the G-code of machined parts?

Only for parts you re-machine regularly on the same machine with the same tool. Otherwise, keep the source drawing and the CAM project instead: G-code is tied to one specific setup.

By clearly identifying the version cleared for machining (date or revision index) and relying on visual previews rather than nearly identical file names.
